How a Texas hail claim works, in five steps

Who files it, who inspects it, who decides, and where a roofer is and is not allowed to stand. Five steps, in the order they actually happen.

Step one — get the roof documented

Before anything else, somebody gets on the roof and photographs it. Every slope, the flashings, the penetrations, the gutters and the AC condenser fins, with the date on the file. The inspection and the written report cost nothing and you keep the report whether or not you file and whether or not you hire us.

This step is first for a reason that is entirely about you: filing on a roof that will not total can leave you with a claim on your record and no new roof. You cannot know which it is until somebody has been up there.

Step two — you file the claim

You do, and the reason is a statute rather than a preference:

You file your own claim; we inspect and document; we meet your adjuster on site if you invite us; we build to the approved scope and supplement with evidence when the scope is short; we do not promise an outcome, and Texas law forbids waiving your deductible.

Texas Insurance Code §4102.163 forbids a roofing contractor from acting as, or advertising as, a public adjuster for a property it may work on — that includes filing on your behalf and negotiating the settlement. HB 2102 covers the other half: waiving or absorbing a deductible is a criminal offence, not a discount. Anyone offering either is telling you something useful about how they work.

Step three — the adjuster meeting

Your carrier sends an adjuster to look at the roof. You can invite your roofer to be there, and it is usually worth it: two people on a roof with the same photographs open disagree far less than two people describing it afterwards on the phone. We show what we found. The adjuster decides what the carrier will cover.

Step four — the scope comes back

What arrives is an estimate broken into line items — squares of shingle, feet of drip edge, ridge vent, decking. Read it against the roof rather than against the total. When something the roof genuinely needs is missing, that is usually a scope question rather than a dispute, and it is answered with the photographs and the measurements that show it. We supplement with evidence. The carrier decides. We do not promise an outcome, because the outcome is not ours to give.

Step five — the build, and the walk-through

We build to the approved scope. Property protection goes down first, the roof is photographed as it goes, and the site is cleaned three times — during the tear-off, at the end of every day, and again before we walk the finished roof with you. You settle up when the job is done and you are satisfied with it; there is no deposit on a Waypoint job.

Two things worth knowing before any of this

A neighbour getting a new roof is a reason to look, not a conclusion — hail falls in narrow, uneven paths. And nothing should be signed on a hood: read any contract indoors, away from the person who handed it to you.
