Asphalt shingle roofing in Dripping Springs and Austin

Asphalt composition shingles cover most homes around Dripping Springs and Austin, and they are what we install most often. We are certified with Owens Corning, CertainTeed and Malarkey, so the shingle you pick carries a manufacturer warranty behind our own five-year workmanship guarantee. If hail is what worries you, ask about Class 4 impact-rated shingles — many Texas carriers offer a premium credit for an impact-resistant roof, though whether there is one and how much it is are set by your carrier, not by us. We climb every roof before we quote it, the inspection is free, and there is no deposit.

The short answer

Architectural shingles are the sensible default here, three-tab is for rentals and patch-matching, and Class 4 is worth pricing if you have taken hail once or intend to stay. The shingle is only half the roof, though — underlayment, flashing, boots and ventilation decide whether it ever reaches its warranty.

Which asphalt shingle belongs on a Central Texas house?

Architectural — laminated, two-layer — shingles go on most replacements we do here. They carry more mat than a three-tab, lie flatter over uneven decking, and are what covenants around Dripping Springs expect. Three-tab still has a job: rentals, detached garages, and matching a roof where we are replacing one slope rather than all of them. If the house sits exposed on a ridge, or has taken hail before, start at Class 4 instead.

What actually fails first on a shingle roof here?

Almost never the field of the shingle. What leaks is the pipe boots, whose rubber collars split from ultraviolet long before the shingles wear out; the flashing at walls, chimneys and skylights; the valleys; and nails backing out of hot decking. Ventilation belongs on the list too: a Central Texas attic can pass 130 degrees in August, and without balanced intake and exhaust that heat ages the mat from underneath and voids much of the warranty. It is why a leak is usually a repair rather than a replacement — see roof repair — and why the line items worth reading hardest are the ones under the shingle.

What is a Class 4 impact-rated shingle?

Class 4 is the top class in UL 2218, a test method that drops steel balls on a sample and checks whether the mat cracks; class 4 is the largest ball it uses. It is a real measure of toughness and the one Texas carriers recognise. It is also worth reading what the standard says about itself: UL states there is no established direct correlation between performance against steel balls and performance against real hailstones. A Class 4 roof is more resistant. It is not hail-proof.

Will a Class 4 roof lower my home insurance premium in Texas?

It might, and only your carrier can tell you by how much. The Texas Department of Insurance lists an impact-resistant roof among the things that can earn a discount, and says plainly that each company decides which discounts it offers and what they are worth. Ask your carrier what it credits and whether it wants the UL 2218 certificate on file. We hand you the documentation for whatever we install.

Which shingle brands do you install?

Owens Corning, CertainTeed and Malarkey. All three make architectural and impact-rated lines, and we are certified with each, which lets us register the manufacturer warranty on your roof rather than leaving you a bare materials guarantee. We do not print program tier names until we can show you the certificate behind them — and since Texas does not license roofers, certifications, insurance and references are what you judge us on.

What can you count on whichever shingle you choose?

  • No deposit — you pay when the job is done

You settle up after the roof is on, the site is clean and you have walked it with us.

  • We climb every roof

The scope is written from the roof itself, not from a satellite measurement, so what is quoted is what is up there.

  • HAAG-certified inspectors

The person who inspects the roof writes the scope, and they are trained to the damage-assessment standard the insurance industry uses.

  • Phones answered 24/7

A roof being planned still generates questions at odd hours. The number on this page is the one that reaches us.

How does a shingle replacement run?

  1. We climb it and photograph it. Every slope, flashing, boots, ventilation and the attic where we can reach it. You keep the report.
  2. You get a written scope. Shingle line, underlayment, ice-and-water at valleys and penetrations, boots, drip edge, ventilation, decking allowance.
  3. Material and dumpster placement agreed before anything comes off.
  4. Tear-off, decking check, dry-in, install. Nothing left open overnight.
  5. Walkthrough, magnet sweep, then you pay. No deposit at the start.

Common questions

Can I put new shingles over the old ones?

Sometimes it is code-legal and it is almost never a good idea. A second layer hides the decking, traps heat against the new shingles, and most manufacturers will not warrant it. It also has to come off eventually, and then you pay to tear off two layers.

Can I choose a Class 4 shingle when insurance is paying?

Usually yes, and usually you pay the difference. A policy owes materials of like kind and quality — the shingle you had, not an upgrade. Plenty of our customers put the carrier's money toward the roof and pay for the step up. Ask what it will fund first.

How long does a shingle replacement take, and do you charge for the inspection?

Most single-family roofs here are a one-day tear-off and install, with a second day for large, steep or cut-up roofs. The inspection is free and you keep the photo report either way. Call (512) 305-1111, answered 24/7, or send the form below.
